Taiwan is located on the edge of Pacific-Rim seismic zone. There were two major earthquakes, called 921 and 331 Earthquakes, attacked Taiwan area recently. Some of this buildings in the public elementary and junior high schools were damaged under these two earthquakes. In this thesis, the structural system, structural type, plane geometry, usage duration, and some important indices of the public school buildings in Song-shan and Hsin-yi Districts of Taipei City were investigated and compared with the damaged under 331 Earthquake. The quantitative analytical tools such as the “Unit Column Load Method”, “Wall/Floor Ratio Method”, and “Seismic Resistance Index Method(Is)”,and the “Simplified Taiwanese Earthquake Resistance Capacity Method” were introduced. A detailed analytical model using ETABS to understand the seismic performance of a three-story school building was building was also investigated in this paper.
