The evolution of the commercial districts of a city has qreat influenc on urban development. In order to grasp the complexity and to foretell the qrowth of a city, it is necessary to understand how the business districts have been developing.
The business districts of Taipei have qrown in two basic patterns, one is multi-commercial centers, the other is commercial ribbons. The influence of the commercial ribbons on urban development has been greatly neglected by urban planners. It is the purpose of this study to discover and to establish the effects of the development of commercial ribbons on urban expansion.
Despite that many factors influence urban land use patterns, this study is mainly concerned with urban activities. Based on the research of the spatial structure and social characteristics of existing commercial ribbon we are able to predict the future development of urbvan commercial ribbons and to qive helpful recommendations for better urban planning.
