For deviation of concept in the past, many historic buildings of Taiwan have suffered the fate of being demolished and rebuilt, and the topic of historical buildings and symbiosis with new environment has increasingly received attention in Taiwan. At the time of historical buildings regeneration being put more emphasis, improper or wrong regeneration will not benefit significantly the former buildings, but also may bring damage, to have influence on historical value, even make the regeneration difficult, and cannot have symbiosis and coexistence with present environment.
This study starts from historical buildings, to establish the system for evaluating whether the building has regeneration value, and furthermore, using the status quo and the related researches up to date to find out where the problems and defects are, for future improvement reference. In order to solve the above questions, this article uses the new and old symbiosis concept of environmental symbiosis as the concept foundation, to study its connection with regeneration of historical buildings, and constitute symbiosis principle and symbiosis methods. Symbiosis methods can be divided into two main categories of value expected to be sustained and value expected to be regenerated. Under symbiosis system, there are use, economy and education, while under sustainability, there are historical reality, culture and affections. The symbiosis method constituted in this article will connect between symbiosis value and sustainability value, so that historical building can sustain culture when developing civilization, to reach the goal of mutual symbiosis.
Finally, procedures of this set of building regeneration program are simulated on Red Castle of Shimen. Since Red Castle of Shimen is a historical building in urban area, and is facing the pressure of coexisting with new environment for the fast growth of city. However, for its historical, cultural, and artistic value, how to bring this historical building and new environment to coexist with mutualism and in harmony, is an important topic for study. Thus, this study hopes to apply the established regeneration mode on this case, to test and verify how to integrate new and old environment, promote sustainable development of historical building, as reference for future researches.
