In this paper, I try to discuss the configuration process of consumption landscape in Hsimenting(West Gate District)。 Through the historical study of this specific site(space),we can see the transition process both of urban culture and Taipei’s city’s CBD(Central Business District). According to the analysis of this paper, Hsimenting was set up to be the commercial district during the Japan colonial period . While it was connected to the image of “Asakusa”( a Sakariba in Tokyo), thus it represented the modern civil life that Japanese Empire had announced. Sooner after World War II, Hsimenting had replaced the traditional commercial district of Han, and become the dominant CBD in Taipei city. From the object of nostalgia toward the prosperous Shaihai to the window for the modern comsumption life, Hsimenting had represented the dominant value of urbanity —“Modernity”.
In 80’sm the process of urban reconstruction, the CBD had moved away to the east district, Hsimenting had lost its postion to mediate the concept of modernity and progression. As an old commercial district in Taipei, Hsimenting was then “taken over”by the city youth, and became an important space in which youth subculture performed. Then in the mid 90''''s , by promoting the cultural innovation of the youth, the wave “coming back to Hsimenting”urged by the local government and capital swithched on the urban renewal process in this area. As the public space for the city youth, Hsimenting , intermediating thr globalized youth pop culture, became the specific space that is continually consuming Japan''''s pop culture —the “Hari City”(City of Japan-fever).
